Character Name: Utau Hoshina Series:Shugo Chara Tell Me About Them “Personality”:
The devil on her shoulder - Utau had to be a bad guy and do some horrible things for a while, for the sake of her beloved brother, Ikuto. To protect the people she loves she will do and become whatever she has to. Now, even though she realized that she can't save him that way, and that even if she did, he will never love her the way she loves hi, even now when she's TRYING to be good, a lot of her old ways remain. She can be cold and aloof to the point of cruel when she needs to be. Or when she's just in a bad mood.
The angel on her shoulder - before she was told she had to serve Easter for her brother's sake, Utau had been a pretty good kid. Now that she's joined up with the heroes, she's trying to remember how to be a good kid. She doesn't always succeed, but she tries. Some days.
FOCUS - Utau is VERY goal oriented and driven. When she throws herself at something she will push to and past the point of collapse and still try and force herself to get back up again. We saw this with her focus on getting the Embryo to save her beloved Ikuto, we see this after she breaks away from Easter with her career. Utau isn't afraid of hard work, in fact, she expects that you never get more out of any task than the effort you put in. Anything easy is generally not worth doing, not long term, anyway.
Music - Music is a core part of Utau. Her father. Aruto, was a musician who left his family to spread his music to the world. Her older brother is a gifted violinist who uses his music for evil and hates being forced to do that. Utau herself is a singer and a dancer. While singing comes more naturally to her, she's aware that the skills are linked and pushes herself constantly to improve her physical form, stamina, and breathing. She constantly practices and works out in her spare time, both for song and dance.
Eating - She works hard, and works up an appetite. Utau isn't one to lose weight or get in shape by dieting. No, she kills herself with practice and then eats like a monster to replenish the calories she burned, so she can go practice some more. We don't really see this in canon until she leaves the life of evil, but In feel there is enough there to presume she did that off screen before hand too. Just now that she's "good" she can have eating contests against Kukai. Just to put this in perspective - she has a dancer's body, and can keep up with and sometimes out eat an athletic growing teenaged boy. My theory is that the charas also burn calories and she needs to eat more to support having two, given that all the chara bearers seem to be generally lean/skinny/fit and many of them don't work at it and aren't terribly active before the start of the series.
The history section is very.... truncated. So brief history below. When Ikuto and Utau were kids they spent a lot of time with Tadase as their dads were best friends. One day Aruto, Ikuto and Utau's dad just up and leaves. Not so much as a goodbye. Their mother winds up hospitalized almost immediately after and they move in with Tadase.
Ikutop ran away from home for a while, taking his violin and their father's weird looking key.
Their mother remarries a man who takes her maiden name, Hoshina. Hoshina wants to take over Easter and reports directly to someone he calls "boss". As of canon point Utau does not know who the actual boss is.
Hoshina starts his quest for the "Embryo" a magical egg that can grant wishes. To this end he forces Ikuto to work for him. He then tells Utau how miserable Ikuto is, and that he'll be free once they find the Embryo and give it to the boss. Certain that this will make Ikuto fall in love with her (yes, she wound up more than crushing on her own brother) she becomes bound and determined to get the Embryo and free him.
Easter discovers that Batsu-tamas (X eggs) can be drawn out with certain sounds. Ikuto is forced to use his violin for this. Utau uses her voice.
Utau becomes a hot ticket super star and performs sold out concerts where she uses her voice to draw out Batsu-tamas in the hope that one of the eggs drawn out will prove to be the Embryo. It never is.
Utau winds up clashing with the Guardians, first at a concert, and then many times after when they try to heal the Batsu-tamas and help the children whose hearts' eggs she cruelly ripped out.
After many confrontations with them, and revealing that like their leader she can Chara-nari and chara-change, a new strategy is born. She's been fighting them for so long she's sick of it. But then she finds a way to put an X on one of the leader, Amu-chan's hearts' egg. Like Utau, Amu-chan has more than one egg/chara. Also like Utau, Amu dares to have the audacity to be falling for Ikuto. So the chance to steal one of Amu's charas? Yes please. She puts an X on the diamond egg, and it hatches into a batsu-chara.
Utau discovers new powers when chara-changed (magical girl transformation) with X-Dia. Her already ignored Angel Chara is all but pushed out and runs away. If she is gone too long, Utau will lose that part of her soul forever, but she's committed to this dark path and convinces herself that she doesn't care. Eru, the angel, runs away and joins up with Amu of all people, to try to get Amu to fix Utau.
Soon after Eru leaves, the devil chara Iru, realizes that Utau has no plans to ever chara change with her again, focused on dark Dia.
With the Batsu-chara version of Daia, Utau is able to transform into Black Diamond. Using her manager's little brother to infiltrate Amu's school, he starts leaving dark CDs around for people to find, CDs made from batsu-tamas. Once someone listens to it, they are trapped, and the next time she sings as Black Diamond, no matter where she is, they are drawn to her like a pied piper, flocking to her and then giving up their hearts' egg. The Embryo is never among them.
The Black Diamond arc concludes on a rooftop in a battle where Kairi, the manager's brother, has turned on Easter and is siding with Amu and her friends. WORSE, BOTH of Utau's charas are working with Amu. The Embryo appears, briefly, while her manager, Yukari is dangling and about to fall to her death. Utau hesitates, then chooses to save Yukari's life rather than pursue the Embryo. Mushy scene where Dia purifies and shojos at them and Utau changes sides, and chara-naris with her angel chara, helping Amu purify all the batu-tamas and batsu-charas, saving everyone.
Utau thinks long and hard and comes to some painful conclusions. She won't be the one to save Ikuto. As long as she stays with Easter, Hoshina can use the two siblings against each other. She's hurting him more by staying. Ikuto is clearly and irritatingly in love with Amu and of she doesn't back off he won't even love her like a sibling anymore. She doesn't WANT to serve Easter any more. Her music isn't for hurting people. She wants back who she used to be.
So Utau quits Easter, and is shocked to find that her manager, Yukari, is willing to quit with her. Of course, Easter operatives leaving her to die dangling like that might have had something to do with it. Her ex boyfriend also quitting Easter might also have something to do with it (given they get married post canon point)
Utau enters an uneasy truce with Amu, telling the other girl that she had better save Ikuto, or else. She also sort of befriends Utua's senpai, Kukai, not that she's willing to admit they're friends. He's just some kid she has ramen eating contests with. (They wind up together past canon point, so I feel justified in ny guess that she more than just tolerates him, no matter what she claims.)
Trying to perform for the sake of performing however, becomes hard as Easter starts a smear campaign over how she left and most venues refuse to let her hold concerts. She takes to singing in the park out of a desperation to SING and be heard, and starts gaining enough people's hearts to convince them that maybe Easter is lying, and she starts getting booked to the occasional gig here and there, though she has to do a lot of the promoting herself. Which mostly means forcing amu and Amu's friends to hand out leaflets and talk her up.
And that's to canon point. She occasionally steps in to help Amu and them fight, but since they often fight Ikuto, she's been trying to keep scarce. She keeps inviting him to shows and being disappointed. For all she is backing off, she does still love him very much and is trying to come to terms with herself as to what kind of love it is.
